Color Psychology + Your Home

So you need to choose which colors you want to use in your home, but where to begin? While choosing the color alone can be overwhelming, the colors can also have a great impact on our senses and emotions. When choosing colors for your home, it’s important to remember these tips so you don’t end up feeling over energized in your bedroom when you're trying to relax or like your entryway is unwelcoming because the color you chose is too dark.

Reds

Red packs a big punch. This is why it is most often used as an accent color rather than a main color. In a lot of people it increases blood pressure, heartbeat, energy and can bring about feelings of passion, intimacy and oddly enough…hunger. Which if you may have noticed is why it is used often in restaurants. It’s a great choice for an accent wall in kitchens and dining rooms.

Oranges

Orange is a friendly and welcoming color. Various shades, tints and hues of orange look good in living rooms and kitchens.

Yellows

While yellow is similar to orange and is warm and welcoming, it also packs a punch. It is a good paint color to use in darker areas of the home that need to be brightened up such as hallways, entryways, bathrooms or kid’s rooms.

Greens

Green is probably the most relaxing of all the colors. It is most often found in nature and reflects a calm, freshness and is more versatile than blue. Greens of different hues, tones, and tints are perfect for any living space - bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, dining rooms, anywhere! Since green is so soothing, you can often find it in hospitals, office buildings, schools and hotels.

Blues

Blue is ideal for bedrooms because it is a calm and tranquil color and has the same effect on our emotions. But steer clear of blue for dining rooms and kitchens because unlike red, it is an appetite suppressant.

Purples

Violet or purple can be difficult colors. Unless it is close enough to the color found in roses and other flowers, people often dislike the color all together. Soft hues of purple look beautiful in rooms such as dining rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms or kid’s rooms.

Browns

Brown is the color of earth and is found everywhere in nature. While brown can be a sad color, it is typically a more masculine color and why men are more often drawn to brown than women are.

While these tips are helpful when selecting colors for your home, ultimately choose the colors you love. The emotions or sensations you feel from these colors may be different from those mentioned above and it’s important to go with what you love. You want your home to reflect your personality and should be a place you always feel happy and comfortable in.
